10 Skin Myths

I’ve made it a personal task to ask everyone I know what they think they know about skin, and skincare that there are a lot of misconceptions out there being told by god knows who.
These are the ten that were mentioned the most, hopefully this list will be able to clear up some confusion.

1)   “Skin Breaths.” It most certainly does not. Each pore doesn’t have its own individual muscle that allows it to take a whiff of our standard pollution. Its nourishment comes from the oxygen you take in through your lungs that’s delivered to it by blood. So when you take off that heavy foundation and sigh “Ahh! Now my skin can breathe,” it’s not really true.
2)   “Soap is a good enough cleanser for my face.” Washing your face with soap does feel like a good cleanse, but actually it cleans a bit too much. Soap is very harsh and stripping, this makes the skin vulnerable to anything, and everything until it attempts to restore its pH balance which does take it a while. Soap is best kept away from your face.
3)   “My skin is dry.” There’s a huge difference between your skin being actually dry, and dehydrated. Think of it this way. Dry Skin = Lack of oil. Dehydrated Skin = Lack of water. You can’t be both oily, and dry, you can be oily and dehydrated. Your skin either produces too much oil, just enough, or not at all. Treating actually dry skin requires you to use a lot of moisturizer, treating dehydrated skin would require you to exfoliate (or scrub) your face to get the dead skin off and giving skin the ability to retain water again.
4)   “Sitting in the sun will treat my acne.” No. Sitting in the sun will hide the appearance of acne, but will also lead to hyper pigmentation, skin damage, and excessive drying that will signal the skin to produce more oil therefore screwing you over and making more acne for you to “treat” in the sun.
5)   “I don’t like using ‘chemicals’ on my face.” I think by chemicals you mean preservatives? Which are not bad at all for your face, in fact they prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi, and other little creatures that are willing to crawl right into your fabulous pores and well, you know how that goes.
6)   “Scrubbing my skin will clear my acne.” Hmm. Scrubbing is very harsh and will force your skin to make more oil = more acne. If you do have an acne problem scrubbing is the last thing you would ever want to do, try a more mild form of cleansing to prevent causing more damage and irritation to your skin.
7)   “I know my cleanser is working because my skin feels tingly when I wash it.” Your face feels tingly because it’s irritated and probably inflamed. These “tingly” cleansers breakdown the collagen in your face, so you will age faster and slow down your skin’s ability to heal. No more tingly cleansing, please.
8)   “I’m too young to care about aging.” You’re never too young to care about aging. Aging is easier prevented than treated. Preventing a wrinkle is SO much easier (and cheaper) than erasing them. Don’t shy away from the wrinkle care and jump on that wagon before you need Botox.
9)   “I don’t need moisturizer, I have oily skin.” I don’t know what it is about moisturizer and oily skin that have people imaging the moisturizer as the oil monster jumping around on your skin. If you find the right moisturizer for you, you won’t need to worry about looking sticky. Just look for products that says “Oil Free” on the bottle, they exist.
10)  Last and certainly not least, my personal favorite. “I don’t need to use sunscreen.” Please refer to my last post “The Importance of Sunscreen.”

Forget Nose Strips. Try This. (The FaceShop Volcanic Clay Blackhead Dual Nose Sheet)

What's the best way to get rid of blackheads?
I finally found it. The BEST way to get rid of them.

So many cleansers promise blackhead removal, and we all know that shit doesn't work.
Nose strips promise blackhead removal too, and we all know they'll be back 3 days later.

This one is the answer.
It's not a nose strip, there's no false promises. It's simply a blackhead remover.

This is THE FACE SHOP: Volcanic Clay Blackhead Dual Nose Sheet.
It's a two step method that can be used once a month to take all those pesky blackheads right off, and keep them off (depending on how good your skincare routine is) for a whole month before you see them coming back!

It's really simple.

1) You'll need a blackhead extractor. 2) You'll need an hour of your time (Well worth it)
3) You'll need The FaceShop Volcanic Clay Blackhead Dual Nose Sheet
Step One: Open Step One of The FaceShop Volcanic Clay Blackhead Dual Nose Sheet. Simple right?

Step Two: Put it on your nose.

Step Three: Wait 20 Minutes. Make sure it's placed properly on your nose.

Step Four: Take Off the Nose Sheet

Step Five: Start Extracting. This is going to be the easiest extraction you've ever done in your life! Step One of The FaceShop Volcanic Clay Blackhead Dual Nose Sheet has a nice set of ingredients that loosen up the blackheads, making their removal SO EASY! Even though the directions state that you would use a cotton swab to extract the blackheads, it doesn't work very well. So stick with the extracting tool. Look at the picture above. You'll find two ends to the extractor, use the end that's on the bottom (Flatter, Wider). The movement you'll be using should be a pressured slide down your nose. If you need to go over the area a few time, go ahead. This side of the extractor doesn't leave dents in your skin like the other side does. If your nose gets red, don't worry about it. It fades away.

Step Six: You're done! Just kidding. You're almost there. Open Step Two and put it on your nose for another 20 minutes. Step Two closes your pores, and all that redness from the extraction should be gone by the end of those 20 minutes.

Step Seven: Wash your face. Use a Toner. Essence. And/or Serum. Moisturizer.

And you're done.

It's very easy, and the results are amazing!

Just a side note. Do this at night. You shouldn't do anything that opens your pores and leave the house, you'll get acne bigger than your head!

Good Luck!

Baking Powder BB Deep Cleansing Foam Review

I've been waiting for this one anxiously in the mail for over a week now, and I finally got it. This facial wash is AMAZING.

  • Removes Make Up
  • Exfoliates Face - Gently
This product comes in this normal to oily skin package and a Moist package for dry skin. A little goes a long way, all you need is a pea size drop for your whole face, and even then you might feel you used too much of it. It leaves a nice "Oh my god is it windy in here?" feel to your face, and to me that's a major "I SUPER CLEANED YOUR PORES" signal. The only other face wash I know with that ability is the Clean and Clear Deep Action Cleanser.

Price range wise, it's a bit pricey .. $12 but I can definitely say it's worth the money, I believe the 150ML bottle will last you about 6 to 9 months, that's how little you need of it to work. I'm giving this one a 5 out of 5. Etude house know what they're doing.

innisfree it's real cucumber mask review

Another Soko Glam Purchase Trial.
The first thing I noticed about this mask was it's lovely scent. As soon as I opened the bag I was met with a nice citrus-like fragrance. Which was weird, cause, it's real Cucumber, right??

The mask, compared to the Etude House, MJCare, and  Manefit is extremely thin, and easy to tear. Which I did while I was unfolding it. It took a bit longer to put on just for that reason, so that's something to keep in mind. This mask offers you "Ultra Hydration" which I felt from the minute it touched my face. One thing that made me extremely happy with this mask was that it was not sticky, which made it that much easier for my skin to completely absorb, I had nothing left when I tried to squeeze the mask for some goodies for my neck, no complains.

Pros:

  • Non-Sticky
  • Easy Use
  • Nice Fragrance - But does not smell like Cucumber
  • Hydrating
  • Smoothing
  • Soothing
  • Brightening
Cons:
  • Delicate
Overall, A++ for this mask. I can deal with a delicate mask when I get so many benefits in return. Will definitely be buying this one again.

(Mijin Cosmetics) MJ CARE Snail Essence Mask Review

The very first thing I noticed about this mask, compared to the Vitamin A Etude House Essence Mask, was how slimy it was.

It's made out of Snail Mucin. Oki, it's weird, I agree. But in Chile, the snail farmers noticed how younger and smoother their hands looked and how fast their cuts and scraps were healing when they were handling snails. It's said that the mucin beats wrinkles, scarring, and inflamed skin as well. I dont know about you, but I was personally sold.

I put this mask on after washing my face, exfoliating, and using the toner. It's super sticky. But that's expected from Slime. It gave me a nice cooling effect that lasted even after I took the mask off. My skin seems brighter, but since it's the first time to use it I know I won't be seeing any MAJOR changes. It took a while for my skin to absorb it, a little too long if you ask me, but I assume it's only cause it's much thicker than the other masks.

Pros:

  • Soothing
  • Moisturizing
  • Brightening
  • Cooling
  • Nice Powdery Smell
Cons:
  • Sticky
  • Thick
  • Slimy
Overall, I'm not sure I want to buy this again. I'll definitely be trying different masks from this company, but if I were to decide to give the Snail Essence another chance I'll be trying out another company's first to see if it's any different.

Etude House Essence Mask Vitamin A Review

I've always wondered how Korean women managed to have such gorgeous skin. So I decided to dive in head first in their beauty market to test their products out hoping that I end up having good skin like theirs. I ordered this Etude House mask along with a bunch of other Korean masks from Soko Glam, a Korean product website run by Charlotte, a Seoulite who decided to bring the Korean beauty market to the US and Canada.

One of the very first things I noticed about this mask was it's size. This doesn't fit properly on your face, I had to keep adjusting it while it was on to make sure it had proper contact with my skin.
It was a little sticky, but nothing unbearable, and there was a soft fragrance to it that was not at all chemical, I appreciate that about it.

It's said that this mask is supposed to help with wrinkles, loose, and dry skin.
I don't have wrinkles or loose skin but in December my skin is definitely dry and suffering from the cold air. I've noticed after the mask that my skin was soft, smooth, and a little brighter than what it was before I used the mask.

Pros:

  • Softening
  • No need to wash face after use
  • Hydrating
  • Brightening
  • No Chemical Smell
Cons:
  • Too Big
  • Slightly Sticky
Overall, I enjoyed using this mask. And at $2 per mask it seems like a good investment. Will definitely be getting some more for myself, and maybe even for my mum.

Clinique: Acne Solutions Clear Skin System Starter Kit Review

It's always nice to go to the mall and look at new things, but while girls usually like to go look at clothes. I like to go look at make up, and skin care lines.

I had a nice conversation with a Clinique sales person, and she managed to convince me to buy the Acne Solutions Clear Skin System Starter Kittelling me that if it doesnt work within the next month, I should bring it back to her, and we'll figure out a new way to stop my skin irritation. What a nice lady, huh?? Set Includes:
Acne Solutions Cleansing Foam 1.7 fl. oz./50 ml
Acne Solutions Clarifying Lotion 3.4 fl. oz./100 ml
Acne Solutions Clearing Moisturizer 1.0 fl. oz / 30ml

The Cleansing Foam is like Biore's 4-in-1 Detoxifying Cleanser, but it doesnt smell as good, which is Clinique's point. 100% Fragrance Free. It's smooth, very gentle on the skin, and easy to wash off.

After using the Cleansing Foam, you dry your face, get a cotton ball, or the cotton rounds and use a bit of the Clarifying Lotion to remove dirt and make up residue. Remember the Salicylic Acid we mentioned in the last post??

Note: While wiping your face, be gentle, you're not scrubbing pots and pans. Your skin is very sensitive, and you should treat it with tender love and care.

Last, but not least, the Clearing Moisturizer. It's smooth, not sticky, and doesnt leave your skin looking shiny!! (YAAY)

It's very important to keep your skin hydrated. Lack of hydration will cause breakouts, blackheads, and access oil production. In the long run, it prevents premature lines and wrinkles. You need to know that using these chemicals strip your skin of moisture, it's enviable.
NOTE: If you have Combination, Oily, or Acne-Prone skin, it's always best to use an oil free moisturizer. I've had it for roughly three weeks, is it working?? Yes. I can tell the difference, it doesnt irritate my skin when I use it. I've been using it day and night (For the best results) and I have to say, I've very happy with it so far. Clinique: Acne Solutions Clear Skin System Starter Kit Score: A++ Would you be willing to pay $35 dollars to use the Clinique: Acne Solutions Clear Skin System Starter Kit?? Why and Why Not?? Dont forget to send me emails with thoughts, and comments at thebotexperience@gmail.com CWKhalil
